Exponential Stairs

The Exponential Staircase (2013) was an artistic research project by students of the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, as part of a 3 day Shrinking Man masterclass that investigated the experience of becoming smaller. The daily topics evolved around the themes of food, the body, and space/the city. The Exponential Staircase was a rather succesful attempt to experience what shrinking would feel like by ways of physical engagement with the built environment. By increasing the size of each next step of the staircase the experience of shrinking manifested itself physically. It became physically tangible. Each next step asked for a greater effort and a different engagement of the body, at some point including using hands and arms to push yourself up.
